St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association

Professional organization will promote film appreciation and profile of cinema art

St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association, a professional association for film critics in the greater St. Louis area.
Membership is composed of film critics from all media outlets and includes film critics at the St. Louis Post
Dispatch, St. Louis American, Playback, and other media outlets. GFC was founded in late 2004.

The new organization is a membership-driven group, organized to be of the critics, for the critics, and by the
critics. In 2005, the group voted to adopt rules based on those of the long-established Kansas City Critics Circle,
for membership, ethics and other organizing rules. The member critics elected Sandra Olmsted as the first
Director. Other officers elected are Catherine Marquis-Homeyer as Assistant Director and Mark Glass as
Recorder.

The association is a professional association for St. Louis area film critics. The goal of the organization is serve
the interests of local film critics, and also to promote an appreciation for cinema as art form and its societal,
cultural and historical context and impact. The organization hopes to encourage film appreciation in the St. Louis
area, raise St. Louis’ profile as an area that appreciates cinema, foster communication between film critics and
film educators and historians, and to raise the profile of film art in the St. Louis area.

Membership is by invitation, with recommendation from a member critic, to working St. Louis-area film critics
reviewing for media outlets including print, radio, TV and websites. The officers verify the outlet and members
who are strongly opposed can block a nominated potential member. Members can be removed, for ethics
violations or other reasons, by a simple majority vote of the membership. Film critics who wish to resign, retire
or cease to be actively reviewing critics will be removed from membership at least by the next year’s review of
the membership. Officers will be elected by members at the beginning of each new year. Additional rules for new
members or officers may be developed as the organization evolves.

The organization confers year-end awards for the best films released or screened for critics during the year, as
well as awards for the best films in the annual St. Louis International Film festival and the St. Louis Filmmakers
Showcase. The association is developing a website, which will include information on the organization, our
awards, and links to the members’ reviewing outlets and to other film-related St. Louis websites, such as Cinema
St. Louis.
